Born out of an idea by observers David Jones and Stephen Johnson, IAM RoadSmart Lincolnshire started a monthly observed drive in May 2026 to offer continuing professional development for its members and associate drivers.
August 2026: Next Monthly Observed Drive
For the next monthly observed drive, we’re going to rendezvous at Wickenby Aerodrome Cafe, north east of Langworth, on Sunday 23rd August at 10:00 am, when we welcome all members and associates to join our morning drive out on Lincolnshire’s fine roads, driving a route devised to exploit the subjects of bends and overtaking.
May 2026: First Monthly Observed Drive

The F1RST successful Monthly Observed Drive got underway from the Co-op car park in Collingham.
Splitting into pairs, we set off for a drive, delving deeper into the coursebook Human factors, looking in detail at what can cause certain decision making, red mist, and much much more.
Returning to the rendezvous point, we gathered for a drink and a group debrief, with all finding the morning useful, meaningful, and above all, worthwhile.
June 2026: Second Monthly Observed Drive
Keen to support as many members as possible is a challenge given the size of Lincolnshire and for our second monthly observed drive, we head south to Heckington Windmill near Sleaford on Sunday 14th June.

Pairing observers with associates and members, we set off on a route devised by Stephen that was designed to maximise the subject of ‘Bends’. Returning to Heckington Windmill nearly an hour later, we convened in the parlour of Miller’s House Tea Rooms for a drink and a group debrief.
All those present agreed the morning had been useful and worthwhile, and are now looking forward to our next monthly observed drive.
July 2026: Third Monthly Observed Drive
Our third Monthly Observed Drive took place on Sunday 12th July when we rendezvoused at The Woodcocks Lincoln at Burton Waters.
Stephen had devised a great route around the roads of Lincolnshire so the members, associates and observers in attendance could maximise the subject of Overtaking.
With Stephen acting as a stooge, drivers followed Stephen and were all able to perform several box and rolling overtakes before returning to The Woodcocks for a drink and a debrief sat in the sunshine under a huge oak tree.
All those present agreed they had enjoyed the drive finding it beneficial and worthwhile, and are now looking forward to our next monthly observed drive, when our focus will be on Bends and Overtaking.
